What is force measured in?
Newtons
What is the equation for force?
Force = Mass x Acceleration
What are tensile forces?
Pulling forces acting on the ends of internal structure
E.g., muscles onto tendons, onto bones
What are compressive forces?
Pushing forces acting on the ends of an internal structure
E.g., bones onto cartilage onto bones
What are the 2 types of external forces and what are examples?
Contact forces (ground reaction force, friction, air resistance)
Non-contact forces (gravity, electromagnetic)
What are colinear forces?
Multiple forces applied in same line of action/same or opposite direction (tug of war)
What are concurrent forces?
These act through the same point of application but not on the same line. Resultant of two or more concurrent forces depends on both magnitude of each force and angle of application.
