Are mental health conditions treatable? How?
Often they are! Ex: through psychotherapy, biological interventions etc.
Are the rates of nonengagement with & dropout from treatment high or low? Why?
High because effective treatments aren’t available or accessible to everyone
What is stigma? Why is this bad?
Literally a mark of disgrace or shame. It is the biggest obstacle to future progress b/c they are heavily discriminated against. Ascribed less humanity.
What is the ABC of stigma?
Affective (prejudice), Behavioral (discrimination), Cognitive (stereotype)
Describe the process model
- Begins with identifying and labeling human differences
- Link labeled person to undesirable characteristics
- Begin to form that “us” & “them” between L.P
- L.P then experience status loss & discrimination
- Which then leads to differing access to multiple sources & maintains it
What is sanism?
Systemic oppression on the basis of an actual or perceived mental condition
What are some formal stigma reduction interventions? Does it last?
Education (tends to not be enduring) and positive social contact (better). Programs have to be sustained over the long term.
What do FSR Interventions highlight?
The need for more structural and systemic changes.
