Introduction Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Matter is the substance of which physical objects are made.
Define an element.
One type of atom e.g. He.
Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
What is a compound?
Two or more types of atoms e.g. CuSO4.
Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically bond together.
What are pure substances?
Elements and Compounds.
Pure substances have a uniform and definite composition.
What happens when elements or compounds transform into each other?
This is known as a chemical reaction.
Chemical reactions involve breaking and forming bonds between atoms.
What are mixtures?
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous.
Mixtures consist of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
What is an alloy?
Mixture of metals
