Conception

Langston Taylor presented to the Most Honorable Big Brother Leonard F. Morse the proposition of establishing a new fraternity at Howard University. The Most Honorable Big Brother Charles I. Brown was invited to aid in the movement.

The Most Honorable Big Brother A. Langston Taylor was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1890. His life motto was “Service to Humanity”. He gave 12 consecutive years of service to Phi Beta Sigma, serving as the first President. He was Director of the Taylor Art Museum and President of the Taylor Tobacco Company.

The Most Honorable Big Brother Leonard F. Morse was born in New Bedford Massachusetts, in 1891. He was a successful businessman and clergyman. He was Dean of B.F. Lee Theological Seminary. (Bonus: The Distinguish Service Chapter was proposed at the 15th Annual Conclave in New York City, December 1929, by Big Brother I. L. Scruggs, of Theta Sigma Chapter.

Alain LeRoy Locke Honors Chapter
The Alain LeRoy Locke Honors Chapter of the Most Honorable Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, is based upon the principle of Scholarship and is the highest honor which can be attained by a collegiate member. The minimum GPA to be considered for induction is 3.5. (Bonus: The Alain LeRoy Locke Honors Chapter was proposed in 2009 by the Big Brothers Paul L. Griffin, 32nd International President, and Steven Kniffley, then International Second Vice President.)

Sigma Wellness is a signature community initiative adopted at Conclave 2007 and has the following objectives: a. To Support Sigma's vision of ensuring programs are focused and committed to serving our communities and serving young males through mentoring and scholarships. b. To ensure symmetry among all of our organizational and community initiatives. c. To develop a sense of pride and commitment in the community toward healthy living that will reduce the incidences of health conditions that adversely affect men of color. The programs of Bigger and Better Business, Education and Social Action are realized through the Fraternity's overarching program, Sigma Wellness.
