Health Psychology
Focuses on promoting healthy behaviors, preventing illnesses, and improving overall health
Stressors
events or conditions that trigger stress responses
Eustress
good stress, motivating
distress
bad stress, debilitating
hypertension
caused by stress, where your blood pressure elevates (high blood pressure)
Tend to befriend
A womens response to stress where they nurture themselves and others by bonding together
Problem-focused coping
seeing stress as a problem that needs to be solved and they work at it until its solved (school, work, health, relationships)
Emotional-focused coping
Managing emotional reactions as a means of coping
(deep breathing, meditation, medication)
Deep breathing
focuses on inhaling/exhaling to calm body down
meditation
working to get a relaxation response by focusing on thoughts, attention, emotions, and breathing
Stress
Can be seen as motivating or debilitating (most stressful event: chronic daily hassles)
General adaptation
our stress response system defends, then fatigues
Alarm reaction
Adrenaline starts pumping, your heart rate increases youre alarmed
ex:driving to school and you run out of gas
Resistance Phase
Stress hormones are released, cortisol, to work on planning adaptive coping strategies
Exhaustion stage
You are exhausted and resources are exhausted leading to illness
Fight-Flight-Freeze Response
Phase 1 of general adaptation syndrome leads to nervous system reductionin pain and heart rate increasing
