introduction to neurophschology Flashcards
what is the amygadala?
located deep inside temporal lobe - proccessing emotions - linked to agressive behaviour
cognitive neuroscience?
scientific study of the influence of brain structures in mental proccesses
aim of cognitive neuroscience?
make a map of the brain
cognition?
mental proccesses of mind
effects of stroke?
blood supply is interupted because of blockage or brain bleed - damage to motor area effect movement - fine movement or complex movements
CT scanner?
examined by x rays - lies in dohnut shape scanner - rotates around them - images are taken from different angles - cross section of a persons brain - put all of these togehter
strengths (CT scans)
they can reveal abnormal structures of the brain - higher detail than normal x rays
weakness?
lot’s of radiation - as there is alot of detail to the picture so they are not able to be used often
PET scans?
record which part of your brain is the most active - inject a radioactive substance called a radiotracer - when this is taken up it shows the most active areas of the brain will absorb most of it - sent to computer - appear different colours - red and yellow are the most active brain areas - more actove than the blue areas
strengths?
pet scans are able to show the brain in action and can show localisation of function
weakness?
extremely expensive - results may not be easy to interprit - ethical issues to do with the injection - technique is only able to be used a few times
