Introduction to Pathophysiology WK1 L1 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the branches of the nervous system?
Central nervous system, Peripheral nervous system
What are the parts of the Central nervous system?
Brain and Spinal Chord
What does the brain do?
Receievs and processes sensory information, initiates repsonses, stores memories, generates thoughts
what does the spinal chord do?
conducts signals to and from the brain, controlss refelx activities
What are the parts of the peripheral nervous system?
Motor Neurons, Snsory neurons
What do the mototr neurons do?
Send signals to muscles and glands
what do the sensory neurons do?
send signals to organs and central nervous system
what are the parts of the motor neurons?
somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system
what does the somatic nervous system do?
controls voluntary movements
what does the autonomic nervous system do?
controlls involuntary responses
what are the parts of the autonomic nervous system/
sympathetic nervous system , parasympathetic nervous system
what does the sympathetic nervous system do?
fight or flight
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
rest and digest
Hypoxia
Low oxygen saturation of the body, not enough oxygen in the blood
Free radical
Unstable molecules that cause biochemical aging, especially wrinkling and sagging of the skin.
Antioxidant
Organic molecules that help protect the body from harmful chemicals called free radicals
Atrophy
the wasting away of a body organ or tissue; any progressive decline or failure - to waste away
Hypertrophy
the enlargement of an organ or tissue from the increase in size of its cells.
Hyperplasia
increase in number of cells
Metaplasia
Mature cell type is replaced by a different mature cell type
Dysplasia
abnormal development or growth of cells, tissues, or organs
Apoptosis
process of programmed cell death
Necrosis
