Introduction to Photosynthesis Flashcards
(13 cards)
Chemical Reaction
The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more substances.
Chloroplast
A membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis.
Energy
The ability of a system to do work; required for changes to happen in a system.
Glucose
A sugar composed of six carbon that is the preferred energy source for most cells; produced by photosynthesis.
Matter Cycle
The movement of elements or molecules through a repeated sequence of events.
Microorganism
An organism that is too small to be seen by the naked eye.
Photosynthesis
A chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant
energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction
converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose).
Phytoplankton
Microorganisms that absorb carbon from the
water during photosynthesis; pivotal for the
carbon cycle in marine environments
Products
A substance produced during a chemical reaction
Reactant
A substance that takes part in and undergoes
change during a reaction
Autotroph
An organism that can make its own food, being able to produce complex organic compounds such as proteins and carbohydrates.
Biochemistry
The study of chemical reactions in living organisms, the chemistry of life.
Chloroplast
The organelles within plant cells where photosynthesis takes place, harnessing energy from sunlight to make sugars.
