What is Qualitative data? Give examples
Data which is not expressed in numbers and so cant be analysed statistically eg interviews
What is Quantitative data? Give examples
Data which is expressed using numbers eg height, age, weight
What is the mean of data and how is it calculated?
The average score. You add all of the scores in a set of data together and divide by the total number of scores
What is the median and how is it calculated?
The middle score. Put all of the scores in order from the highest to the lowest and the score in the middle of these is the median.
What is anonymity and how can it be maintained in a research study?
When a research participant remains nameless. Participants can be given numbers to indicate who they are
What are ethics? Give an example of an ethical consideration
The moral principles which surround an area of study. Participants should not be subjected to a study which will cause physical or mental damage in any way
What is an independant variable? Give an example
The variable which is deliberately changed by the researcher or is thought to be the cause of a change in the participants eg amount of sleep
What is the dependant variable? Give an example
The variable that is measured by the researcher eg how alert the participant is during a sleep study
What is the controlled variable?
All other factors which should be kept constant in an experiment
What is a hypothesis?
A guess or prediction about the outcome of an experiment
State two examples of how you might present data in a research report
table, line graph, bar graph, pie chart
What is debriefing?
Where participants are told the real aim of the study and the deceptive processes that were used during a study because there was no other way to conduct it fairly
