Dionysus
God of wine, grapes, plays, spontaneity, ambiguity, etc. His follower, Thespis, was the first actor. The Greater and Lesser Dionysia were dedicated to him
Ecstasis
An effect Dionysus has on his followers. Means taking a person out of where they were standing before
Aeschylus
Wrote the Oresteia. Lived in early 4th century BCE in Athens. A playwright and a soldier

The first scientific historian
Thespis
A follower of Dionysus. The first actor, stepped out a chorus to talk in character
Agamemnon
Son of Atreus, son of Pelops, son of Tantalus. A cursed house. Sacrificed his daughter, Iphigenia, infuriating Clytemnestra. Father of Orestes and Electra. Led the fight at Troy to get Helen for his brother, Menelaos. Brought Cassandra back with him. Made to walk on a red carpet. Killed by Clytemnestra and Aegisthos, his cousin
Iphigenia
Daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Sacrificed by Agamemnon to Artemis to repay for the pregnant rabbit he killed and allow the winds to blow again. Her death leads to his
Cassandra
Apollo gave her prophecy in exchange for sleeping with him. When she didn’t, he made it so that no-one would listen. Agamemnon brings her back from Troy. She predicts his and her own death
Erinyes
Spirits that first arose from Kronos’ blood hitting the ground after his castration. Come from the blood spilled by someone of the same blood. Very frightening. Torment Orestes for killing his mother. Transformed into the Eumenides
Labdacus
Distant cousin of Dionysus. Good king of Thebes, with a sharp temper. He passes this trait to his son, Laius, who passes it to his son, Oedipus
Jocasta
Wife to Laius. Prophecy that their child would kill him and sleep with her. Attempt to have Oedipus exposed. Later marries him. Has Antigone, Ismene, Polynices, and Etiocles with him. Figures out what she has done and hangs herself
Polynices
Son of Oedipus and Jocasta. Asks him for his blessing. Is refused because he didn’t take care of him, as was his duty. Killed by Etiocles while attempting to take power in Thebes. Condemned to die without burial by Creon. Antigone fulfills her promise to him by burying him twice under pain of death
Thebes
An archetypical city thought to be a bad place in contrast to Athens. Where Jocasta and Laius ruled. Later ruled by Jocasta and Oedipus. Later by Creon
Haemon
Son of Creon, fiance to Antigone. Attempts to convince Creon not to put her to death. Is ignored. Visits her tomb to break her out, but discovers she has hung herself. He hangs himself. When Creon finds out, his wife hangs herself
Trilogy
Three plays written at the same time to form a whole. Oresteia the only true one left. Often followed by a satyr play
Aegisthos
Son of Thyestes, son of Pelops, son of Tantalus’ cursed house. Agamemnon’s cousin. Became Clytemnestra’s new lover while he was at Troy. Helped her kill him
Enthousiasmos
An effect Dionysus has on his followers. It refers to being filled with the god
Theatron
A place to view as a spectator. Carved out of a hill
Sophocles
Athenian playwright around 450 BCE. Wrote the Theban Plays. Part of the Sophistic Movement, which asked if a person really knew what they thought they knew
Plato
He wrote down Socrates’ teachings, which spearheaded the Sophistic Movement
Choros
Non-individualized group who commented on and reacted to the events of the play
Skênê
The word for scene. It means tent, which was the first piece of scenery
Clytemnestra
Wife of Agamemnon, mother of Orestes, Electra, and Iphigenia. Furious at Agamemnon for sacrificing Iphigenia. Took Aegisthos as a new lover while he was at Troy. Made him walk on the red carpet and killed him when he returned. Killed by her son. Her blood causes the Erinyes to hound him
Orestes
Son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Ordered by Apollo to kill his mother in Choephorai. Afterwards, the Erinyes haunt him until the Athenian trial finds him not guilty
