Aegeus
Father of Theseus. King of Athens. Theseus tells him that he will change the sails from black to white if he is successful in killing the Minotaur. He forgets to do so. In despair, Aegeus jumps off the cliff into the Aegean Sea
Minotaur
Son of Pasiphaë and Minos’ white bull. Imprisoned in the labyrinth Daedalus constructed on his order. Fed with children from Athens every seven years. Real name is Asterion, which means star-child. Killed by Theseus with Ariadnê’s help
Crete
Home of Minos, Pasiphaë, Ariadne, and the Minotaur. A sea-power and centered on bulls
Minos
King of Crete. Husband of Pasiphaë. Father of Ariadnê and Phaedra. Poseidon commands him to sacrifice his white bull, but he does not want to. As punishment, the gods compel Pasiphaë to develop an uncontrollable lust for the bull. Orders Daedalus to imprison the Minotaur in a labyrinth
Pasiphaë
Wife of Minos. Mother of Ariadnê, Phaedra, and Asterion. Compelled to develop an uncontrollable lust for Minos’ white bull after he refuses to sacrifice it to Poseidon. Orders Daedalus to build her a cow suit so she can mate with it. Has the Minotaur later.
Ariadnê
Daughter of Minos and Pasiphaë. Sister to Phaedra. Fell in love with Theseus when he came to Crete to kill the Minotaur. Helped him with the red thread to find his way out of the labyrinth. Left by him at Naxos. Rescued by Dionysus, who marries her
Hippolyta
Amazon woman Theseus has an affair with. Her name means one who sets horses free. Has a son with him, Hippolytus. Killed later
Amazon
Tribe of manly women skilled in battle. Exact opposite of Greek women. Rode horses, killed male children, and fought in battle. Came to destroy Athens
Artemis
Goddess of hunting, the moon, baby animals and their protection, wilderness, and celibacy. Something like an Amazon. Wanted no relations with men and had no children. Uninterested in domestic life or weaving. Hippolytus dedicated himself to her at Aphroditê’s expense. Commanded Agamemnon to sacrifice Iphigenia after he killed a pregnant rabbit at Aulis. Spirited her away to Tauris, where she became a priestess in her temple
Troezen
Where Hippolytus and Phaedra have their affair. Hippolytus dies there while fleeing on his chariot
Myrmidons
Achilles’ men. Although he commands them, they still resist his desire to protect Iphigenia
Admetis
King of Thessaly. Husband of Alcestis. Apollo allows him to escape death if someone takes his place. Alcestis does and he promises not to remarry and banishes joy from the palace. He and Herakles rescue her from the underworld. He comes back with a veiled woman. At first, he does not want to look at her, but then takes her to his bedchambers
Alcestis
Wife of Admetis. Took his place in death. Rescued by him and Herakles from the underworld. Comes back as a veiled woman
Mycenae
Where Agamemnon was king and where Clytemnestra killed him for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia. Where Orestes killed Clytemnestra for killing Agamemnon
Sparta
Where Menelaus was king and where Helen was taken from.
Theseus
Son of king Aegeus in Athens. Father of Hippolytus. Mother told him not to move the rock that would inform him of his father’s identity. Wanted to be a hero. Promised Aegeus he’d change his sails from black to white if he killed the Minotaur. Forgot to. Promised to bring Ariadnê to Athens with him. Left her on Naxos. King of Athens. Defended city from Amazons. Had an affair with Hippolyta. Raised Hippolytus. Remarried Phaedra. Drove his son out after he read her note
Hippolytus
Son of Hippolyta and Theseus. Name means “one who sets horses free.” Dedicated to Artemis. Wishes to remain celibate. Spites Aphroditê. Approached by Phaedra and rejects her. She leaves a note blaming him for her death. Theseus drives him to flee on his chariot to the sea, where Poseidon scares his horses, who buck him and he dies.
Phaedra
Second wife of Theseus. Stepmother to Hippolytus. Aphrodite causes her to lust for him after he refuses to respect her. Knows her desire is wrong. He rejects her, so she decides to kill herself. Writes a note to Theseus saying he tried to rape her, causing him to drive him out of his house and indirectly lead to his death
Aphroditê
Goddess of sexuality and procreation. Rejected by Hippolytus because he wants to remain celibate. She punishes him by causing his stepmother to lust for him.
Iphigenia
Daughter of Clytemnestra and Agamemnon. Sister to Orestes. Artemis demands Agamemnon sacrifice her as punishment for killing a pregnant rabbit. Tricked into coming by his letter promising to marry her to Achilles. Eventually gives in to her captors, as per the tradition for sacrificial animals. Decides to die with dignity and courage. Inspires Achilles. Spirited away from Aulis to Tauris after Artemis sends a deer to take her place. Becomes a priestess to Artemis who prepares human sacrifices to her. Receives her brother and Pylades. Attempts to have one of them send a message home to Argos that she lives. Eventually recognizes who she’s talking to. Helps them steal a wooden statue of Artemis from Thoas and bring it to Brauron. Live happily ever after there
Aulis
Where all the Greek leaders met for the Trojan War. Stuck there after the winds stopped blowing when Artemis was angered after Agamemnon killed a pregnant rabbit. Clytemnestra tricked into taking Iphigenia there for sacrifice. She flies from there to Tauris
Agamemnon
Husband of Clytemnestra. Father of Orestes and Iphigenia. Brother to Menelaus. King of Mycenae. Offended Artemis by killing a pregnant rabbit. Forced to sacrifice his daughter as payment. Tries to get her to come alone under the pretense of marrying her to Achilles. Tries to undo it by sending a second letter telling her not to come, but Odysseus intercedes the message. Remains silent when Clytemnestra confronts him about it. Allows her to be sacrificed, calling it anankê Later goes to Troy. Comes back and is killed
Clytemnestra
Wife of Agamemnon. Mother of Orestes and Iphigenia. Receives a letter saying to send Iphigenia alone to Aulis so he can marry her to Achilles. She brings her, Orestes, and her friends for the supposed marriage. Slowly discovers Iphigenia will be sacrificed, especially when Achilles does not know about it. Confronts Agamemnon about it, but he remains silent. Calls her sacrifice murder. Kills Agamemnon when he comes back and is killed by Orestes
Achilles
The greatest Greek fighter. Leader of the Myrmidons. Agamemnon pretends to want to marry Iphigenia to him. He does not know. Upset that his name is used for deception. His ignorance shows Clytemnestra that Iphigenia will be sacrificed. Wants to save her, but the Myrmidons want to go to Troy. She does not want him to die for her. She gives him inspiration
