Inverted U Theory Flashcards
(5 cards)
What does the inverted U theory explain?
That as arousal increases so does performance. Up to a certain point
What is the ‘certain point’ called? And what is meant by it?
It is called the optimal point of arousal and is it when the performer is performing at their best and are completely focused on the task
What happens if arousal is too low?
The performer is unmotivated and and performance is low
What happens if performance is too high?
The performer starts becoming unfocused and starts making mistakes. This leads to a drop in performance that can raise the anxiety levels of the performer and cause they to get even more aroused
What can the optimal point of arousal also be described as?
The performer Can be described as “in the zone”
