What area in London went through function changes? And why did it change?

A

London’s east end docklands, the Thames use to be used for container ships but as ships were being built bigger the Thames was too shallow, manufacturing shifted to Asia as big ships were needed as they are cheaper

  • falling investment=environmental quality declined
  • crime rose up (burglary up to 68%, violence up to 71%)
  • deprivation and ethnic tensions led to riots in 1981 (Brixton)

  • deprivation remain in social housing areas
  • right to buy=doesn’t replace with affordable housing=people’s income spent on rent
  • Tower Hamlets- lowest life expectancy (77) in London
