Investigating The Composition Of Inks By Simple Distilation Flashcards
(21 cards)
Why should we clamp the conical flask?
To reduce the risk of it falling over, reduce hazards
Why are blockages in the delivery tube dangerous?
Could result in a build up a pressure, resulting in injury
How to we know if we have blockages in the delivery tube or not?
Blow through
What do you do once the flask is on the heating triangle, above the bunsen burner?
Add in ink to the flask
What do you add to the ink solution and why?
Anti-bumping granules, to ensure a smooth boil
Where should the bung and delivery tube go?
In the conical flask
From the ink solution in the conical flask to the ice
After the apparatus is set up, what is next?
Light the bunsen burner
How should you always light a bunsen burner?
With the hole either closed or closed partially
What should we do to the ink solution?
Bring it to a boil
Why should you always have a hand on the bunsen burner?
To move it out of position if the ink solution starts to violently boil
What happens as the ink solution boils?
Condensation appears in the delivery tube
Where should the bung and delivery tube go?
In the top of the conical flask
Why don’t we heat the ink solution too much?
We don’t want the ink solution to boil over to the top of bung and carry over into the receiver, the delivery tube and follow into the test tube
How should the ink solution be heated?
On a rolling boil
After a couple of minutes what can you observe?
That water has been collected into the test tube
When can we touch the apparatus?
When boiling has stopped and there is no more steam coming out of the delivery tube
What is the boiling point of water?
100°C
When you take the test tube out of the water, what can you observe?
There is pure water and no ink
When can you disassemble the equipment?
When the temp has dropped to 50°
