ionic bonding Flashcards

1
Q

what are noble gases

A
  • group 0
  • atoms of noble gases are inert/ unreactive as they have stable noble gas electronic configuration with full electron shells
  • hence they do not combine chemically with other atoms to form compounds
  • they exists as individual atoms (monoatomic)

Q

why are other atoms reactive

A
  • they want to achieve a stable noble gas electronic configuration with full electron shells
  • they do so by gaining, losing or sharing valance electrons
  • when atoms gain or lose electrons, they form ions

Q

ionic bonds

A
  • formed between metal and non-metals
  • electrons are transferred from metal atom to non-metal atom
ionic compound is formed as a result or strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions

Q

mp bp of ionic compounds

A
  • high mp bp
    SBEP
S: they have giant ionic crystal lattice structure
B: with strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
E: which requires a lot of energy to overcome
P: thus ionic compounds have high mp bp

Q

electrical conductivity of ionic compounds

A
  • cannot conduct electricity in solid state as there are no free mobile ions to carry charges as the oppositely charged ions are held in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces of attraction
  • can conduct electricity in molten and aqueous state as there are free mobile ions to carry charges as the electrostatic forces of attraction between the positive and negative ions has been overcome
