Ionic Bonding Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What is an ion?
A
A charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons
2
Q
What is a molecular ion?
A
A charged particle containing more than one atom
3
Q
What is a cation?
A
Positive ions that form when atoms lose electrons
4
Q
What is an anion?
A
Negative ions that form when atoms gains electrons
5
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
An ionic bond is the attraction between oppositely charged ions
6
Q
When does ionic bonding occur?
A
Occurs between metals + non-metals ( metal compound)
E.g when a na and cl atom react together, the Na atom loses its electrons to the cl atom and 2 ions are formed with full outer shells
7
Q
Why are ionic bonds hard to break?
A
They’re strong and substantial energy is required to break them
