What are factors affecting ionization energy

A

Nucleur charge (no. of protons)

Atomic Size
(due to no. of e- shells)

6
Q

How does nuclear charge affected ionization energy

A

When the no. of protons increase = Nuclear charge becomes more positive = Increase efoa btw positive charged nucleus and negatively charged electrons
= More energy needed to remove 1st e- from atom to form a +- charged ion= increase I.E

Q

HOW DOES NUCLEUR CHARGE AFFECT TREND IN I.E ACROSS A PERIOD

A

Across a period =
Chem elements have same no. of e- shells, chem elements add one additional proton

–> only nucleur charge increases = increase f.o.a on all negatively-charged e- –》 held closer and more strongly to the + charged nucleus

Q

How does atomic size affect i.e

A

When more electron shells, distance of valence e- from nucleus INCREASE

attraction of + charged nucleus for negatively charged valence e- decrease

less energy needed to remove 1st electron from atom to form a +-charged ion

decrease i.e

Q

TREND IN IONIZATION ENERGY DOWN A GROUP

A

down a group, one more electron shell for each elementz +- charged nucleus further from negatively charged valence e- = attraction btw +- charged nucleus and - charged valence e- decrease = less energy needed to remove valence electron= decrease i.e down grp

Q

data for IONISATION ENERGY

A

where the graph drops to, that is the e- removed

From graph, sharp increase/ decrease when ____ electron is removed, showing that it is removed from a diff shell, this shell is closer/ further to the nucleus. More/ less energy needed to remove valence e- = thus from ___ group
