Q

All matter is made up of these three things:

A

Atoms
Molecules
Particles

17
Q

Molecules are made up of 2 or more ____?

18
Q

The smallest unit of matter is called an ___?

19
Q

Two or more atoms bonded together is called a ____?

20
Q

Define “evaporation”

A

The process of turning liquid into a vapor

21
Q

Define “condensation”

A

The process of turning vapor (gas) into a liquid

22
Q

Define “thermal energy”

A

Heat energy. Thermal energy is always transferred from hotter areas to colder areas. All materials have thermal energy.

23
Q

Define “closed system”

A

Does not allow the transfer of matter in or out of a system, but does allow energy to be transferred.

24
Q

Define “open system”

A

Does allow the transfer of matter and energy in or out of a system.

25
Define "kinetic energy"
Energy an object has because of its motion (energy of the molecules). A fast moving ball has more kinetic energy than a slow moving ball.
26
Define "temperature"
Average kinetic energy of particles within a substance or area.
27
What is the formula for density?
d = M/V (density is mass divided by volume)
28
What are the first five steps in the scientific method flow chart?
1. Ask a question 2. Do background research 3. Construct a hypothesis 4. Test with an experiment 5. Procedure working?
29
If the procedure is working, what is the next step in the scientific method flow chart?
Analyze data and draw conclusions
30
If the procedure isn't working, what is the next step in the scientific method flow chart?
Trouble-shoot procedure, carefully check all steps and set-up. THEN go back to the "test with an experiment" step.
31
What if you analyze the data and draw conclusions and it all aligns? What is the next step?
Communicate results
32
What if you analyze the data and draw conclusions and it doesn't align?
Ask a new question, form a new hypothesis.
33
What are the full seven steps of the Scientific Method Flow chart if everything checks out and aligns?
1. Ask a question 2. Do background research 3. Construct a hypothesis 4. Test with an experiment 5. Procedure working? 6. Analyze data and draw conclusions 7. Communicate results
34
What is an independent variable?
The independent variable is the one that is changed by the scientist. (Why just one? Well, if you changed more than one variable it would be hard to figure out which change is causing what you observe.)
35
What is a dependent variable?
The dependent variables are the things that the scientist focuses his or her observations on to see how they respond to the change made to the independent variable.
36
What is a control group in an experiment?
"Control group, the standard to which comparisons are made in an experiment." "A control group is a group in an experiment on which a variable is not being tested, such as a test subject that does not receive any treatment."
37
What do less dense objects do when put with more dense objects?
Float on top
38
Tell me a bit about what Archimedes discovered? (Hint: it had to do with a crown.)
Gold and silver/density and displacement of water.
