KEY TERM - Tawhid
The oneness of God.
Muslims believe that there is only one God, and that God cannot be split into different parts.
Why do Muslims use the term ‘insh Allah’ and what does it mean?
It means ‘God willing’ and Muslims say it to show their belief in God’s will and how God is in control.
What is the Qur’an?
The Holy Book of Islam.
Muslims believe it is the literal, uncreated word of God.
Muslims also believe that the Qur’an is the final words sent down from Allah.
Who does the phrase “people of the book” refer to?
Christians and Jews as Muslims believe that the Bible is the corrupted version of the Qur’an.
KEY TERM - Salah
Ritual Prayer - Muslims are expected to Pray 5 times a day as Salah is one of the five pillars of Islam.
How many times are Muslims expected to Pray every day?
Five
KEY TERM - Wudu
Ritual washing before Prayer.
Why do Muslims perform Wudu before they Pray?
So they are ‘Spiritually Clean’ and ready for Prayer.

A sequence of movements in ritual prayer

Being ‘God conscious’ and having the right intentions

Communal prayers that happen once a week, midday on Fridays.
These often include a sermon.

What makes Du’a prayers different from Salah prayers?
Du’a prayers are personal prayers that Muslims can make without any set time frames or expectations.
However for Salah prayers are ritual prayers that are performed at five set times during the day.
What is the significance of Prayer in Islam?
- Shows submission to Allah
- Cleanses away corruption of the world
- It’s a reminder of the presence of God
- Unites Muslims (Umma)
- It removes sins “as water removes dirt”
In which direction do Muslims face when they pray?
In the direction of the Ka’bah in Mecca.
KEY TERM - Zakah
Almsgiving - one of the Five Pillars
Muslims give 2.5% of their savings as Zakah at the end of Ramadan every year.
Where does Zakah money go?
To whoever needs it :
- People in debt
- The poor and the needy
- Prisoners of War
- New Muslims
- Travellers who need money
- Muslims studying Islam
- Schools, hospitals, libraries, and Mosques
Who is exempt from giving Zakah?
People who don’t have enough / are struggling for money.
KEY TERM - Ramadan
The ninth month of the Muslim calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
Why is Ramadan the most important month in the Islamic calendar?
Muslims believe that it was during the month of Ramadan that Allah began to reveal the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad.

Fasting during Ramadan - one of the five pillars
KEY TERM - Iftar
The meal eaten at sunset during Ramadan to break the day’s fast
KEY TERM - Shahadah
Declaration of Faith - One of the five pillars
What does the Shahadah say?
“I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”
