What is universality?
Any underlying behaviour that can be applied to all humans despite individual differences
What is a bias?
Theories influenced by social/ historical context of the time impacting research and interpretation of results
What is a beta bias?
Every gender is treated the same so theories applied to all

MISREPRESENT them
What is an alpha bias?
Only one gender behaves in the correct way
What can alpha bias do to a gender?
DEVALUE them

Androcentrism is men are only behaving correctly

A tendency to ignore cultural differences and think one behaviour is norm everywhere

It can MISREPRESENT behaviour

A form of culture bias where belief that one culture is superior
What is the major issue with ethnocentrism
Leads to PREJUDICE/ DISCRIMINATION and MISINTERPRETATIONS
What is an emic behaviour?
A behaviour native to a specific culture
E.g British and queuing
What is an etic behaviour?
Where a behaviour is native universally in all cultures
Eg sleeping
What is an imposed etic?
When emics and etics get mistaken for each other
Eg thinking handshaking is a normal greet everywhere
What is the issue with imposed etics?
Causes MISUNDERSTANDING and MISINTERPRETATION
What is cultural relativism?
The idea that certain norms can only be relevant in the specific social and cultural context
What is the problem with cultural relativism?
Avoids culture bias but prevents universality
