what is morality?
principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong

the infliction of a penalty for retribution for an offence
whats a sin?
an immoral act
What is suffering?
the state of undergoing pain, distress or hardship
what does our conscience do?
allows us to access the good and bad but gives us free will to do as we please
How should we make hard moral choices?
look at our past experiences to help us to learn
follow the law
reach out to trusted figures or religious leaders
turn to religious texts e.g bible (what would jesus do)
what is situation ethics?
our response to the same things changes in different environments and circumstances
What are utilitarian choices?
the decision made for the greatest happiness of the largest number of people
What is absolute morality?
principles that never alter such as ‘thou shall not kill’
What is relative morality?
holds a moral principle but it can alter in different circumstances
Crime vs a Sin?
a crime goes against government laws and a sin goes against gods teachings and words
What is the aims of punishment?
to protect the victim and rest of society
retribution- get back on those who committed
deterence- prevent people committing again
reparation- reparing the damage done
vindication- laws need to be followed and respected
reformation- reform people to re-enter society
Views on justice in Christianity?
religion of forgiveness, Jesus forgave those who betrayed him, don’t believe in retribution, Jesus taught compassion not revenge, need to recognise where the crime has been formed
‘let justice roll on like a river’
Islamic belief on justice?
forgiveness is important but protecting society is more important, dont punish to remove sin that is for allah to decide, punish to keep law in order, shariah law for religious countries
Who was Elizabeth Fry and what did she do?
Quaker Elizabeth fry dedicated her life to improving conditions in prison and opening a school in pentoville prison to teach children basic life lessons
The death penalty?
still legal in some countries, two wrongs dont make a right, prison is extremely expensive, some criminals cant be reformed, forgiveness is important, victims families can have closure
Christian attitudes to death penalty?
Attitudes vary, only god has the right to take a life, ‘thou shalt not kill’, jesus forgave the adulterous woman, reform, quakers- every life is god given
old testament- ‘an eye for an eye’
Muslim views on death penalty?
They accept it, will be punished on judgement day but also should be punished on earth, forgiveness is important but so is protecting the ummah, ‘nor take life’ ‘except for just cause’ , shari’ah law encourages death penalty for adultery, homosexuality, terrorism and murder
Amnesty views on death penalty?
disagrees fully, violates human rights, discriminates, political tool, does not deter crime
