What was the first vine training system in Italy?
The Etruscans introduced the system whihc encouraged the vine to grow high and be supproted by tree branches.
What was the name of the Etruscan system of training?
Alberata or Vite Maritata all’albarello (married to the tree).
What is the modern equivalent of the Etruscan system of training?
The Pergola and Tendone systems.
What is the feature of the modern pergola and tendone systems?
They allow the canopy to grow high above the ground and spread horizontally with the grape cluster hanging under the horizontal trellis.
What are the main methods used in Italy today for vine training?
Vertical Shoot Positioning - VSP. The fruiting canes are tied vertically to horizontal wires.
Which two categories of VSP are commonly used in Italy?
Cordone Speronato and Guyot.
What is the feature of Cordone Speronato?
It is a permanent cordon (arm) of old wood (or two) trained horizontally.
What is the feature of Guyot training?
One or two new canes are kept each year and are trained horizontally.
What regional variations of the Guyot method are found in Italy?
Cappucina, Capovolto and Archetto.
Which non-VSP method is found in Italy?
Alberello - bush trained.
What is the feature of Alberello vines?
The vines are allowed to grow as free standing bushes low to the ground. It is appropraite in arid, hot climates.
