3
Q

what is the IT band

A

reinforced tract of fascia connecting proximal to the TFL and glute max and distally to lateral tibia

  • provides lateral support at knee, escpec when knee is extended

Q

causes of ITB contracture

A
  • activities that place knee and hip in flexion
  • postural imbalances (APT)
  • prolonged WC use or bed rest

Q

causes of ITB friction syndrome

A
  • prolonged repetitive activities where hip and knee and flexed (running)
  • poor TFL stretching
  • anterior pelvic tilt

Q

symptoms

A
  • pain at lateral thigh into lateral aspect of knee
  • shortening IT band
  • thickened, adhesion and fibrositic nodules
  • inflammation due to IT band rubbing over lat.femoral condyle
  • HT and TPs in TFL, hip flexors, rec fem
  • valgus / hyperextension of knee possibly
  • trochanteric bursas can develop

Q

pain present contracture vs friction syndrome
