macule
no elevation or depression
patch
greater than 1cm with no elevation or depression (bigger than a macule)
papule
an elevated solid lesion up to 1cm. raised.
plaque
a circumscribed, raised and greater than 1cm. surface area< height
nodule
elevated. taller than wide, variable shape. large nodule referred to as a tumor.
cyst
nodule that is fluid filled
vesicle
full of fluid, but more superficial. less than a 1cm in size
bulla
vesicle that is greater than 1cm in size
pustule
vesicle or bulla with purulent exudate. may or may not be infections
crust
dried fluid
scale
overproduction of skin
lichenification
area of skin that itches
atrophy
depression in the skin resulting from thinning of the epidermis or dermis and fat
can also refer to atrophy of underlying tissue.
erosion
focal loss of epidermis. heal without scarring bc does not penetrate below the dermal epidermal junction. often has crust.
excoriation
erosion caused by scratching. often linear
fissure
deep linear split into skin caused by drying. pretty deep and into dermis
ulcer
focal loss of epidermis and dermis. deeper so heals with scar
scar
focal replacement of fibrosis of skin. can be hyper tropic (tall and thick) or atrophic (sink down)
wheal (hive)
edema in the skin from infiltration of dermis with fluid.
comedone
plug of sebaceous and keratinous material lodged in opening of hair follicle. may be dilated or narrowed.
telangiectasia
dilated superficial blood vessels
petechiae
deposit of blood in skin less than 0.5 cm in diameter.
purpura
a circumscribed deposit of blood greater than 0.5 cm
annular
lesions that form a complete circle
