I have here, Martha Meza, whose scheduled to receive a 14 French Foley catheter inserted to help with her bladder distention, as she has been unable to void for several hours now.
1. Hand hygiene
- ” Hello, I am nurse Erika, I will be taking care of you today…
- … May I please have your first and last name?… and date of birth? So, the nurses have noticed that you have been unable to void for the past several hours because your bladder is distended, and I heard that this has been causing you pain and discomfort. Your physician ordered a 14- French urinary catheter for you, to help alleviate that pain but before I do that I’d like to examine your pelvic area if that is okay with you?”
- Assist patient in DRP.
- Don gloves and palpate the bladder for distention. ID meatus
- Assess perineal care “I see no drainage and it appears clean.”
- … Do you have any latex or iodine allergies? No? Ok, good, then we can go ahead and use the catheter that was ordered. I will be right back with that.
- This is a 14-French urinary catheter, it is not expired and it is intact, just as appears on the physician’s order
- Hand hygiene upon entering room
