Jacob’s XYY Flashcards
(15 cards)
How many chromosomes does the average human have?
23 pairs of chromosomes (46 in total)
What type of disorder is the XYY syndrome?
It is a genetic disorder
What is the XYY syndrome otherwise known as?
‘Super male syndrome’
Give three characteristics of an XYY male.
- Increased levels of testosterone
- Severe acne during adolescence
- Slightly taller than average
Is XYY syndrome inherited?
No, it’s an error which occurs during fertilisation
What is the extra chromosome present in XYY syndrome?
An extra Y (male) chromosome
What are some behavioral issues associated with XYY males?
- Minor behavioral problems
- Increased aggression
What was reported in 1960’s research regarding XYY males?
Males with an extra Y chromosome (XYY) are more likely to be violent/criminal
What might contribute to criminal behavior in XYY males?
Increased levels of testosterone
True or False: XYY syndrome runs in families.
False
Fill in the blank: The chromosome inherited from our mother is always an _______.
X chromosome
Fill in the blank: The chromosome inherited from our father can be either an X chromosome or a _______.
Y chromosome
What are some physical characteristics of XYY males?
- Slightly taller than average
- Longer limbs
Patricia Jacob’s: What did she study and discover?
-She examined 197 Scottish prisoners for chromosomal abnormalities with a simple blood test.
-The results entailed that men with XYY syndrome were more aggressive and potentially violent than the normal XY male.
-Jacob’s also discovered that XYY men were over-represented in the prison population as a higher than average proportion of the inmates were found to have XYY syndrome.
>For every 1,000 prisoners, 15 suffer from XYY Syndrome.
>For every 1,000 individuals in the general population, 1 suffers from XYY syndrome.
