shirley’s case 1604
MP thomas shirley was arrested for debt. this arrest upset the MPs because they wanted to establish parliamentary privileges of freedom from arrest while parliament are sitting. to assert this point parliament sent a governor to tower of london until shirley was released
hampton court conference 1604
to establish how he wanted the church settled and as response to the millinery petition, james called a religious conference at hampton court. the only permenant achievement from the conference was the beginning of the new english translation of the bible known as king james’s bible completed in 1611
recusancy fines
fines imposed on anyone who didn’t attend the compulsory church of england service on sunday, those committed to catholic and puritans religion were most likely to not attend they felt they couldn’t attend a service they didnt agree with
jesuits
religious order seen as the aggressive arm of the catholic church that fought to convert protestant countries to catholicism under the pope
