CHAPTER 1
-Utterson’s desire to be a respectable victorian gentleman however he struggles to maintain this e.g “rugged countenance” not clean shaven. Suggests these expectations are impossible to follow
-“never lighted by a smile” - miserable as harsh standards are hard to follow. Show’s his restraint > good victorian gentleman
-Gin is a lower class drink > would damage his reputation
“I incline to Cain’s heresy, I let my brother go to the devil in his own way”
CHAPTER 1
-Biblical allusion >story from the bible > not getting involved in others’ businesses > expected of victorian gentleman > Utterson is subtly but constantly challenging expectations > Stevenson criticising the harsh expectations
-Utterson is unable to fulfil what is expected (not getting involved) of him when he deep dives the will
-IRONIC!!!
-Says he wont interfere in evil > doesn’t last > greed of curiosity has too much of a hand over him
-Tension between societal expectations and individual freedom
“dry divinity”
-desire to be considered a normal victorian gentleman
-in reality he finds it boring > gradual disatisfaction with expectations
“clock of neighbouring church”
-wants to be considered a normal victorian gentleman

-forshadows his gradual movement away from religion > reflects stevenson desire for society to move away from religion
-describes his movement in stopping reading
