utterson Flashcards
(3 cards)
“Mr Utterson the lawyer…was never lighted by a smile”
- “Mr” creates a formal tone and distances him from the reader
- Infers a degree of societal success and responsibility
- Metaphor - unhappy (despite social success)
“If he shall be Mr Hyde, I shall be Mr Seek”
- Strong curiosity > Enfield is satisfied taking things at face value while Utterson yearns to dig deeper
- Homophone (Hyde) suggests intelligence
-Ironic > curiosity drives Jekyll too yet lead to his downfall
“I incline to Cain’s heresy, I let my brother go to the devil in his own way”
CHAPTER 1
-Biblical allusion >story from the bible > not getting involved in others’ businesses > expected of victorian gentleman > Utterson is subtly but constantly challenging expectations > Stevenson criticising the harsh expectations
-Utterson is unable to fulfil what is expected (not getting involved) of him when he deep dives the will
-IRONIC!!!
-Says he wont interfere in evil > doesn’t last > greed of curiosity has too much of a hand over him
-Tension between societal expectations and individual freedom
