rudolf bultmann
- resurrection was not a historical event but a myth
-need to demythologise the bible
-jesus is the son of god but not in a literal sense, instead he is an expression of what God wanted to say
-modern chrsitians cant accept the resurrection with integrity because it can never be proved
N.T Wright
- critical realist approach
-resurrection accounts contain historical truth but we must be critical about it and attempt to understand it
-testimonies are based on eyewitness accounts and they weren’t expecting or waiting for a resurrection so why would they make it up
-the resurrection suddenly became central to christian teaching, drawing it away from Jewish and Greek belief systems - While Jesus died in a prescientific era, people weren’t stupid and would have been able to tell if he had never actually died or his grave was robbed
Dualist
- the idea that the mind or soul and the body are two different things
-greek idea that after death the soul could live on without the body
Jewish beliefs on death
-vague with a wide spectrum of ideas
-some believed in sheol a place for the dead to slep
-some hint at a soul but others require a bodily existence
-many rejected life after death and saw it as a metaphor for the return of the nation of israel
philippians 1:21-24
For to me, living is christ and dying is gain. If I a to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me: and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard pressed between the two:my desire is to depart and be with christ, for that is far better: but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you
Matthew 10:28
do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul:rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell
1 corinthians 15:12-14
Now if christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? if there is no resurrection of the dead then Christ has not been raised: and if christ has not been raised then our proclamation has been in vain, and your faith has been in vain
