- Why are Moses, Isaac, Jacob and David important for Judaism?
Moses is a prophet, Isaac was the son of Abraham, Jacob was the father of the 12 tribes of Israel and David was king of Jerusalem.
- What does Diaspora mean? Why did they have to leave the Promised Land?
It means when you’re not a part of the Holy Land. They were being followed and discriminated against.
- What was the result for Jewish faith when the Jews left the Promised Land?
It declined, but the ones who kept to their faith got a stronger sense of it.
- What is the Zionist movement?
It’s the moment of returning the Jewish people to their homeland in the Land of Israel.
- Describe the origins of Judaism! Where did they come from?
Jews believe to be descended from a tribe that lived in Canaan.
- Mention some events in Abraham’s life that are crucial for Judaism!
When Hagar got pregnant, and Ishmael was born. When isaac was born. When God spoke to him and told him that he was the chosen one. When he was told to prove his loyalty.
- Why are the Jews referred to as “the people of the book”?
Because Jews need to know the torah which they follow and can find their rules in.
- What is the oral law? What does the oral law contain?
The oral law is the laws not written in the torah, and the orthodox jews follow these laws as if they were in the torah. They contain different rules, all differing from everyday life and holyday things, such as the sabbath. Called Talmud
- ”Explain” Messiah! What is his mission?
Messiah is supposed to bring world peace and the saviour/liberator of the jews.
- Why were the two Temples of Jerusalem built and destroyed? Who destroyed them?
The first one was the temple of Solomon. It was destroyed by the Egypts. The second temple was built by Cyrus the great. It was destroyed by the Babylonians.
- What is the Western Wall? What is it used for today?
It was built to protect the temple previously mentioned. To Muslims, it’s one of the holiest place.
- Why are women important for Judaism?
they’re very important because if you’ll automatically become a jew if your mom also is one. They get to speak their mind freely in Judaism!
- Why is it important to study the Torah? Who is responsible for the children’s studying?
It’s important for them, it contains the scriptures and laws of Judaism and can be compared to the Bible.
- Explain Kabbalah! What is the Zohar?
It’s the ancient wisdom of how life and the universe works. It’s the scripture explaining the Kabbalah. The Zohar also contains some comments and thoughts on the Torah.
- Describe how a Hasidic Jew looks like?
They have payo often black and white formal clothing and hats. A hasidic jew also uses a sort of tallit all time time under his clothing. But when we Hasidic jew are there also Hasidic women and they are not allowed to show their shoulders, elbows and knees and if you are married are you not allowed to show all of your hairs so they often wear a hat or even a wig.
- Why are Reform Jews rejected by the Orthodox community?
Because of the revolt they made against the orthodox way of living.
- What is Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah?
It’s when you become a man - you show that you’re truly a part of judaism in the sense that you’re allowed to read from the Torah, you’re mature enough to do more things - by doing your Bar Mitzvah you show this. you read the weeks Parascha.
