Abraham
Patriarch of the religion “The father of many nations” the sign of the covenant
Covenant
a solemn and binding agreement between God and humanity. God agreed to love humanity and humanity agrees to love God
Exodus
a going out; a departure or emigration, usually a large number of people: the departure of the Israelites from Egypt
Hanukkah
festival of lights, occurs early winter (nov/dec), recalls the Maccabean rebellion and rededication of the Temple and the miracle of oil
Chuppah
canopy used over the bride and groom
Ketubah
a Jewish marriage contract, integral part of a traditional Jewish wedding and outlines the rights and responsibilities of the groom in relation to the bride

the Father will say a Kiddush Blessing, bless the challah bread and thank God for providing the food

leader of service, to become a rabbi one must undergo extensive training (teacher of Jewish law) also responsible for performing ceremonies at weddings, funerals, visiting the sick and being the community spokesperson

Rosh Hashanah
along with Yom Kippur are known as the ‘Days of Awe’ (Jewish New Year): deals with judgement and atonement
Seder
special meal eaten during Passover. The table will be set with red wine, 3 matzot bread and a seder plate. Will also be filled with symbolic foods
Vegetable dipped in salt: tears of slaves

feast of weeks or Pentecost, recalls the day God gave Moses the Ten Commandments (people read the book of Ruth)
Shema
(Deut 6:4-5) “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your might”
