Juliet W/ Lady Capulet Flashcards
(6 cards)
-nurse, come back again
`She can’t be alone with Juliet as they don’t have a close relationship, doesn’t feel comfortable alone, distant relationship, she did not do much to raise her, normal for wealthy families, needs the nurse as she is closer with Juliet and knows more about her, help her communicate better
This night you shall behold him at our feast, read o’er the volume of young Paris face
Ordering her to look at him, trying to convince her to love him, good for the family if she marries him, formal relationship, shows priorities of Elizabethan women, doesn’t really care if she loves him or not just wants her to marry him
Marry, my child early next Thursday morn, the gallant young and noble gentleman
She is being forced to marry Paris, she has so choice about it, LC and LD have lots of control over her due to the social norm to respect your elders and obey your parents, you did not get to make decisions if you were a woman, her calling her child shows formality and distance between them
Nurse, where’s my daughter? call her to me
no idea about her daughter or what she is doing, emphasises her formality with her daughter, leaves the nurse to deal with her, doesn’t call her Juliet, shows ownership and power over her, she commands Juliet around as well as the nurse, she is telling the nurse her daughter must come to her, shows how she is possessive.
talk not to me, for I shall not speak a word, do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee
shows how quickly she is willing to disown her daughter for disrespecting her, she must agree with her husband, her speech is short showing how she has no time for her and is not willing to talk to her, shows the power they have over her, they do not see her as a daughter but as an obedient animal that must do as they say. her husband and her reputation is more important to her than her relationship with her daughter.
I would the fool were married to her grave
she wishes she was dead, shows how cold hearted and unloving she is to her daughter, she thinks she is stupid for not marrying and that she may as well be dead if you don’t marry as that is all women could do during this time, her disobeying them makes her dead to them and if she ruins the family name they will simply cut her off, disobeying your parents was extremely rude and was nit allowed during these times as your parents, especially your father, owned you if you were a girl until you were married so whatever he said you had to do, you obeyed.
