Juliet W/ Lord Capulet Flashcards
(5 cards)
My child is yet a stranger to the world. She hath not seen the change of 14 years. Let two more summers wither in her pride. Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride
In the beginning he is a good father, respecting her, doesn’t want to rush her, shows love and care, compares her to a fruit which needs to be ripe, shows how women are perceived by men at this time, delicate, sweet yet not equal to them, they decide their life
Earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she, she is the hopeful lady of my earth
The world has been cruel to him, lost children and cannot have anymore, she is his only future, he has hope for her, wants to make sure he hands over responsibility of her to someone he can trust, wants to protect her, she is his entire world
How, will she none? Doth she not give us thanks? Is she not proud? Doth she not count herself blessed?
Questions show his disbelief, angry she isn’t obeying him, he is disappointed in her, a woman at this time should obey men especially her father, she is being disrespectful towards him
You green sickness, carrion! Out you baggage! You tallow face!
He is raging, insulting her, shows his power, his opinions and love for her have vanished as she has disobeyed him, his reputation is the most important thing to him, she could damage the family name by not marrying and having children soon, the worst thing she could do
Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what; get thee to the church o’ Thursday or never after look me in the face.
He will disown her if she doesn’t obey, shows the importance of getting married and obeying your father, he is ordering her, shows male attitudes and the power imbalance at the time, change in their relationship, she no longer gets a choice and he is now rushing her
