What is the basic structure of acyclovir?

It is a guanosine analogue.

Name three viruses that are most susceptible to acyclovir.

HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV.

What are some clinical uses of acyclovir?

Genital herpes, Herpes encephalitis, Shingles.

Describe the toxicities of acyclovir.

Acyclovir is well-tolerated. It is sold over-the-counter as topical Zovirax. There can be nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache.

Clearance of acyclovir?

Renal. Glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.

Half-life of acyclovir?

3-4 hours.

What dose is given to patients with Shingles?

800mg five times a day.
