key area 3:adaptations Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is an adaptation?
an adaptation is a characteristic of an organism that improves the chances of survival and or reproducing
what is an example of an adaptation?
giraffes have evolved overtime to have very long necks which give them easier access to food which increases their chance of surviving
what are the 3 types of adaptation?
behavioural,structural and physiological
what do behavioural adaptations do?
responses made by an organism that will help it to survive/reproduce
what do physiological adaptation do?
they are body processes that help an organism survive/reproduce
what do structural adaptations do?
they are features of an organism’s body that helps it to survive/reproduce
what is an example of a behavioural adaptations for cacti?
they can close their stomata during the hottest parts of the day to conserve water
what is an example of a physiological adaptations for cacti?
they perform parts of the photosynthesis process at night
what is an example of a structural adaptations for cacti?
they have spines to reduce water loss and protect from herbivores
what is natural selection?
they are adaptations that occur through a gradual proccess driven by natural selection
