Crime is functional to maintain boundaries; social control is about reinforcing norms
What theory did Hirschi create?
Social bonds theory- stronger bonds = less deviance.
Bonds = involvement, attachment, commitment an belief.

- Ineffective rehabilitation programmes in UK prisons.
What did Marxists such as Chambliss say about crime?
CJS benefits the ruling class due to the ruling class have power and control of institutions.
What is Reckless’ containment theory?
Everyone is protected from deviance because they have inner and outer containment.
Inner containment = inner control (self concept and responsibility) Outer = external control (societal and community influences)
What is the ID in Freud’s psychodynamic theory?
Freud says we have an ID which we are born with this is the part of us which seeks pleasures and gratifications.
What is the EGO in Freud’s psychodynamic theory?
The ego develops through childhood, and is the most rational part of the personality. Balances the ID and SUPEREGO.
What is the SUPEREGO according to Freud?
It internalises the right and wrong and acts as the conscience. Strives for moral behaviour.
What did Riley and Shaw say?
They argue that parents should involve themselves in their child’s lives and spend time with them, and show interest in what they do. They should also show strong disapproval in criminal behaviour.
