what is a mental map?
a mental map is a personal visualization a spatial information. in other words it’s a map inside our own minds
three ways you use mental maps?
- finding our way from point A to point b
- organizing and storing information for future reference
- they provide people with essential means of making sense of the world and recalling informartion about the patterns of earthss physical and human features
what is a map scale?
level of detail and amount of area covered on the map depend on its map scale
three ways map scales are presented
- ratio or fraction scale
- written scale
- graphic scale
what is a map projection?
a systematic transformation of the latitudes and longitudes from the surface of a sphere into the locationds on a plane, maps cannot be created wwithout map projections
what is geographic grid?
a system of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern on earth’s surface. it allows us to pinpoint absoulte location using latitude and longitude.
what is latitude?
a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on earth’s surface
parallel=latitude
what are parallels?
they run east-west as circles pararllel to the equator
what is longitude?
an geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on earths surface
medridian=longitude
what is a time zone?
a regionof the globe that observes a uniform standard time. for legal, commercial, and social purposes
what is daylight savings?
it’s for part of the year the local clock time is adjusted by an hour.
hwo do you calculate standard devation time?
every 15 degrees its plus or minus an hour
what does UTC stand for?
Coordinated Universal Time
what does GMT stand for?
Greenwich Mean Time
