primary purpose

a text that relies on the interplay of different modes (visual and written) to shape meaning.

a process by which texts borrow or refer to conventions of other texts.
gap-filling
the act of adding meaning based on your own knowledge and the context of the text.
tellability
the features of a story that make it worth telling:
high tellability= a narrative where someone presents interesting material in an engaging way.
- low tellability= a narrative that presents uninteresting material in an uninspiring way.
literariness
the degree to which a text shows ‘literary’ qualities.
space
a location in terms of coordination on a map
place
a location that is given significance and values due to memories.
culture
a set of practices that involve shared ways of thinking and acting.
society
a group of people working and living in a specific place who act out cultural beliefs and practices.
stereotype
a broad representation of a group of people based around exaggerated perceived characteristics.
affordance
a property or characteristics of a particular genre or mode that is used by the writer.
constraint
a property or characteristic of a genre or mode that limits the writer.
exophoric storytelling
when a narrative is told in a different location to where the narrated events took place.
endophoric storytelling
when a narrative is told in the same place as the narrated events took place.
spatial deixis
adverbs of a place.
temporal deixis
adverbs of time.
proximal deixis
deictic expressions that refer to concepts, events, or people close to the speaker.
