Key Terms Flashcards
(13 cards)
CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Controls activities in the body
The Brain
Coordinating centre of sensation and information
Spinal cord
Forms the CNS and connects all of the body to the brain
Peripheral NS
made up of somatic(SNS) and autonomic nervous systems(ANS)
SNS
Made of neurons which influence voluntary movements of the body.
ANS
responsible for converting external stimuli from the environment into electrical impulses
Relay Neuron
They allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate
Motor neuron
Allows impulses to pass from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland in the body.
Form synapses with muscles and control their contractions.
Dendrites
They are connected to the cell body and are the control centre of the neuron.
Cell body
Made up of the axons and dendrites
Axon
part of a nerve cell along which impulses are directed from the cell body to other cells.
Myelin sheath
insulative layer around the axon which helps the nerve impulse to travel faster along the axon
Terminal buttons
Part of the axon which helps with the release of neuro transmitters.
