Kinematics - Unit 1 (forces & motio) Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is Kinematics
The study of motion without regard for the cause
What is Dynamics
The study of the CAUSES of motion
What is motion
A change in position
What is a reference point (frame of reference)
Random location from which position of an object is being described
Describe uniform motion
Motion in one direction at a constant speed
Describe non-uniform motion
When an object speeds up, slows down or changes position
Also called ACCELERATION
Describe Distance
- The SUM of the length of a path travelled
- SCALAR
Describe Displacement
- The CHANGE in position from start to end
- VECTOR so, direction aware!!
Describe speed
Distance travelled per time interval
- SCALAR
Describe velocity
Change in position with time
- VECTOR, , so direction aware
Describe a position vs time graph
It gives us info about speed or velocity (if position is included)
- curved exponential slope
Describe a velocity vs time graph
It gives us acceleration
- linear slopes
What is acceleration
The rate at which an object changes its velocity
