Dynamics Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is a force?
It’s a pull or push measured in newtons.
What are contact forces?
Where one objects exerts a force on another object when they touch each other.
ex) friction, applied, tension, normal
What are non-contact forces?
aka FIELDS
Its where two objects don’t need contact to exert a force on each other.
ex) gravity
What is Force of Friction
exists between two objects that are in motion or attempting to be in motion
always opposes motion
What is applied force
A push or pull resulting from a machine, human action etc.
What is tension
An applied force exerted by a rope or string etc.
What is normal force
A support force that acts perpendicular to a surface between objects in contact.
What is force of gravity?
An attractive force between all objects
we only do math for large masses
State newtons first law of motion
An object at rest stays at rest
An object in motion stays in motion
UNLESS acted upon by a NET FORCE
State two things about net force
- A NF is not required for an object to maintain a constant velocit
- If a net force exists, acceleration occurs.
What is the law of inertia
Its the ability to resist change or “keep doing what you’re doing”
All objects have inertia but larger objects have more
Describe weight
- Its the force of gravitational attraction
W= Fg = m*g
Weight changes throughout the universe depending on its location.
State Newtons second law of motion
- If NF exists, the object will accelerate in the direction of the NF.
How does friction occur
When two objects move or try to move past each other small irregularities on the surface catch each other and create the coefficient of friction.
What is Kinetic friction
Its friction on a moving object
What is Static friction
Friction on a static object (attempt to move)
