Hello- I’m trying to call cosmico efe eme can you please get off the line so I can make my call!
YES I KNOW this is a party line. please! I have to make this call!
Yes, thanks…alright alright! I’ll be quick!
DJ: Quien esta en la linea
Hola! Soy Lucia! Queria pedir la cancion Las Mananitas para mi abuela, es su compleanos hoy.
B: My mom tried to pick up their traditions, carry them on, but.. things change.
It started with two or three families
C: Not families, individuals
more like investors
C: They bought a couple of houses
They’re the ones that started the movement of you know, trying to “clean up” the neighborhood
D: And don’t forget to turn your music down!
WHAT???
C: Because it’s going to become valuable
A lot us were noticing
Alma: So they could flip it
and then they’d go to another minority and offer
C: Not understanding the value of what they had
We were going to different families that we knew were going to sell
D: you know you need a permit to play soccer now, right?
WHAT??
B: Long time residents had little means to rehabilitate their own property and or landlords were remiss to provide the needed repairs
And then people migrated.
A lot of the families moved for many reasons, like they’re moving now for housing costs, employment, it jut didn’t feel the same. And so that was a big change.
B: But it also improved the neighborhood, and made it safer
Some of things that are still standing are nice
D: Alright, who put this couch on my porch?
WHAT?
B: You know what, we had one of the most unified communities
(6 shots)
When Jimmy and Artie got killed by the cops at Curtis Park-how many people showed up?
C: But they didn’t bother anybody you know
They used to clean the park too
D: But the cops thought he had a gun. He didn’t have a gun
It was so screwed up
D: Yeah so we called all the people in
We met at the park
C: so you know when people talk about curtis park and they look at all this stuff
and see us as “bad kids” because we’re from here
C: these matters wouldn’t have been given attention by city administrations
the gentrification didn’t help either. it created separation and strife
which caused daily conflicts
there was a lot going on
we’re going to rebuild cherry creek and all our neighborhoods are going to benefit from that
Our park is downtown
D: and preservation endeavors for the future of this inner city neighborhood
And so we said, okay!
Alma: So, what happened to the name?
June 1987 El Gallo! Get your copy of El Gallo! Extra! Extra! Power to the people! The city has officially announced the name change of Curtis Park to Mestizo-Curtis park.
B: So officially, it became Mestizo-Curtis park
That name was part of our identity
