It’s all about the blowout at West High- students stood up for their rights. There’s another student protest today. The whole city’s talking about it!
C: We demand an end to racist policies that push us out of school.
We demand the removal of police officers from our schools!
C: During high school we did the blowout. All us hispanics marched downtown 16th street with out flags.
I went to manual high school and everybody I knew from manual walked out (si se puede)
D: we believed in each other and that’s all that counts!

The Denver Police department and city officials hated the Chicano movement because they thought we were militant- that we were criminals. They thought we caused a lot of problems. But NO. No, we just believed in rights.
DJ: Even if you don’t believe it now, trust me when I tell you, it makes a difference.

DJ: The other Rec centers were so jealous.

DJ: Tell me, did the black community and the hispanic community get along back in those days musically?
Yeah, of course we did. We did a lot of cha chas and rumba type music for dancing.
D: When we did R&B and blues stuff- that was slow dancing and whatnot.
We played a little of everything. We were influenced by a little of everything.
D: We wore a lot of suits back then
I used to dress up pretty good in suits
B: Oh, they’re good, no?

B: Some people say Sacred heart is the second beating heart of the neighborhood
founded in 1879 and is the oldest operating church of any denomination in Denver.

My name is Teresa, but the nuns said it should be spelled Theresa or Therese with an “h” because that was how St. Therese spelled her name. When I came home with that name on my collar, my mom said OH NO! I was named after my grandmother Teresa, so there was not going to be any changes!
B: I’m getting hungry
Saturdays was pancakes, boiled eggs and bacon. Saturday evenings was enchiladas or tacos. On Sundays was roast or chicken mole.
