Patellofemoral Problems

A

Signs & Symptoms: Gradual onset of pain in the front of the knee or just behind the kneecap, knee gives way, or grinding noise, when the patient is standing patellar appears to be facing inward
Treatment: Correcting suspected cause Over pronation(arch support) Weak external rotators(strengthened) Tight internal rotators(stretched)

Patellar Tendonitis( Jumpers Knee)

A

Signs & Symptoms: Anterior knee pain below the patella, localized tenderness, possible small local swelling
Treatment: Time off to let it heal( can cross train), stretching tight quads, and icing after exercise

Fat-Pad Syndrome

A

Signs & Symptoms: Pain below the knee, movement of knee aggravates symptoms, and tender to palpitation
Treatment: Strengthening exercises that don’t include full extension, icing, and special taping

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Sprain

A

Signs & Symptoms: Limited motion in flexion and extension, swelling in the corresponding part of the knee, and tenderness of the ligament
Treatment: PRICE, moving through ROM w/ out pain
Special Tests: Valgus (MCL) Varus(LCL)

Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament

A

Signs & Symptoms: Felt/heard a ‘pop’ followed by a rapid effusion(swelling within the joint cavity),
Treatment: Splinting, icing, and compression. Reconstructive surgery is needed( taken from the patellar tendon, hamstring, or a cadaver) Full participation within 6 to 12 months
Special Tests: Lachman’s maneuver and Anterior drawer test
