Impingement Syndrome

A

Signs & Symptoms: Pain in glenohumeral area, Pain w/ active abduction in midrange, Limited internal rotation, Tender to palpation in subacromial area
Treatment: Preseason conditioning, Cross training overhead movements, Exercise, and Taping
Special Tests: Hawkin’s Impingement, Neer’s Impingement, Crossover Impingement
Rehab & Prevention: Stretching and exercise

Rotator-Cuff Tears

A

Signs & Symptoms: Pain in anterior side of shoulder, Full or limited ROM, and Catching sensation
Treatment: Most small tears are rehabbed, some small and all moderate to large tears require surgery and rehab
Special Tests: Shoulder hiking during abduction, Drop arm sign, Supraspinatus manual muscle strength

A

Signs & Symptoms: Pain & tenderness in the muscle belly (can be provoked by palpation, stretch, and contraction against resistance)
Treatment: PRICE, Cross training, and gradual return to sport

Biceps Tendon Rupture

A

Signs & Symptoms: Bruising on the upper anterior part of the arm
Treatment: Protection Rest and Ice in the acute phase and gradual return to strengthening and sports over a few weeks
Special Tests: Gilchrist’s sign and Speed’s test

Anterior Shoulder Dislocation

A

Signs & Symptoms: Severe pain in the shoulder
Treatment: Most dislocations can be put back in place before the athlete’s shoulder is immobilized, rehab, possible surgery

Acromioclavicular Separartion

A

Signs and Symptoms: Pain in AC joint area and deformity of the joint
Treatment: Protection Rest Ice Compression and Exercise
Special Tests: Acromioclavicular Shear Test
2nd degree Partial tear severe pain some swelling (˜4 weeks)
3rd degree Complete tear moderate pain large amount of swelling (˜7 weeks)

Brachial Plexus Injury

A

Signs & Symptoms: Weak or numb hand/arm, intense pain in the brachial plexus area, and firery/pins-and-needles sensation
Treatment: Rest until the symptoms are gone, Ice for 20m every 3-4h, begin exercise to strengthen the neck
