A Northern Irish politician who served as leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) from 1974 until 1979

A Protestant, that believed Catholics were enemies of the state- summed up O’Neill’s bridge-building: “a traitor and a bridge are very much alike, for they both go over to the other side”
John Hume
Irish nationalist politician and founder of the Social Democratic and Labour Party
Bernadette Devlin
An Irish civil rights leader and former politician, and served as a member of parliament from 169 to 1974
Ross McWhirther
The cofounder of the 1955 Guinness Book of Records and a contributor to the TV programme Record Breakers. He was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1975
Airey Neave
A British soldier, lawyer, and Member of Parliament from 1953 until his assassination in 1979. Was a close friend of Margret Thatcher and was killed by the Irish Republican Army for being the shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland
Lord Mountbatten
A British statesman, Royal Navy officer, and close relative of the British royal family. Was assassinated onboard his boat, Shadow V, with other members of his family by the Irish Republican Army using a radio controlled bomb

Unionist
Northern Ireland Protestants, that one to keep ties to Britain, due to their historic ties to the nation
Republican/ nationalists
Referred to the Northern Ireland catholics, and are people who want to keep their separation from the British- later called Nationalists
Gerrymandering
Deliberately planning an electoral system in order to exclude a given group and keep a different group in power indefinitely- a popular example is Londonderry
Northern Ireland Civil rights association (NICRA)
Created in 1964, when the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland started to challenge this discrimination. They had a list of demands: one man one vote, redrawing electoral boundaries, and anti-discrimination laws
Apprentice boys
A loyalist organisation that marches annually to commemorate the closing of the gates of the city of Derry to Catholic forces by 13 apprentice boys
