1.Gold discovered in the black hills 1874-land was sacred to the Sioux and protected by the Fort Laramie Treaty 1868
despite this, prospectors flooded into this area and the Us government tried to force the Sioux into reservations

A

native Americans lost their traditional hunting grounds, especially as the buffalo had been wiped out- no longer able to follow the nomadic lifestyle and were forced to stay on the allocated land

native languages, customs and religions were discouraged or banned-forced to speak English

the us government controlled food, supplies and rations-many tribes faced starvation and poor living conditions
