L1 - Content Analysis Flashcards

1
Q

What is content analysis?

A
  • Method used to analyse qualitative data
  • Takes qualitative data and turns it into quantitative data
  • Technique can be used for data in different formats e.g interviews
  • The researcher will need coding units e.g no of positive/negative words used

Q

What is the procedure for content analysis?

A
  • Data is collected
  • Researcher reads through/examines the data, familiarising themselves with it
  • Researcher identifies coding units
  • Data analysed with application of coding units
  • Tally is made each time a coding unit appears

Q

If thematic analysis is used for an interview, what will the researcher need?

Q

Evaluation (+)

A
  • Reliable way to analyse qualitative data as coding units are NOT open to interpretation, so are applied the same way with different research
  • Easy technique and not time consuming
  • Allows statistical analysis as the result produces quantitative data

Q

Evaluation (-)

A
  • Causality cannot be established as it only describes the data
  • It only describes the data, it cannot provide explanations for the pattern
