L12: Control of Breathing & pH Flashcards
(9 cards)
Where is breathing initated and acting on?
Initiated in the medulla
Acting on the respiratory muscles
What is the main respiratory muscle? and what is it stimulated by?
Diaphragm, stimulated by PHRENIC nerves via brain stem
What muscles assist in breathing? what are they innnervated by?
Intercostal muscles, innervated by segmental spinal nerves
2 groups in the medullary respiratory centre
1) Dorsal Respiratory Group
2) Ventral Respiratory Group
What muscles does the dorsal respiratory group contain? and what does it generate?
Contain inspiratory muscles, and generates spontaneous rhythmic bursts of AP
What muscles do the ventral respiratory group contain? and when is it active?
Contains expiratory muscles, active during forced expiration
